Perinatal Trauma relates to the intense, negative emotions experienced during a situation which occurred between the start of pregnancy until a year following the birth. To consider it further, the two key elements can be separated for deeper understanding:
Perinatal – The NHS describe the perinatal period as running from pregnancy through to a year after the baby is born. This can include topics such as an IVF journey, labour and birth, and the postnatal physical and emotional environment.
Trauma – The lasting emotional response following a stressful, distressing or disturbing experience (perceived or real). Emotions present can include intense fear, helplessness and an inability to escape the situation
TBR 3 Step Rewind is an effective and calming method of releasing negative or destructive emotions around perinatal trauma. It allows, through deep relaxation, the processing of memories safely to reduce their emotional impact on day-to-day life.
Step One (90 minute session)
At this stage, if you are comfortable to, you share your story with me.
We work together to determine the impact your perinatal trauma is having on your life, and also the changes you would like to see without the trauma symptoms.
At the end of Step One, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation.
Step Two (60 minute Session, one week after Step One)
At Step Two, I reiterate the process of Rewind, where you are free to ask any questions or worries that you may have had since Step One.
I guide you into a state of deep relaxation where we carry out the Rewind.
In your deeply relaxed state, I ask you to view your memory in your mind and you follow my guidance to process the memory and its associated emotions.
I invite you to consider your future self with all the positive changes, before bringing you back to a wakeful and refreshed state.
You will be guided throughout by me, and you will have full control to end the session when and if you choose to.
Step Three (30 minute Session 10-14 days after Step Two)
Step Three provides us with an excellent opportunity to discover the changes that have been experienced since your Rewind. You will be invited to discuss your current emotions surrounding the memory and identify positive progress.
If required, we can run through the relaxation or Rewind a further time for maximum effectiveness.
Someone who is:
Without previous mental health conditions (excluding depression and anxiety)
Experiencing intrusions, avoidance, negative mood and cognitions, and/or hyperarousal as a result of the emotions surrounding their perinatal trauma
Able to effectively access a guided state of relaxation
